Why School Psychologists are Burnt Out (And What We Can Do About It)

If you are a School Psychologist, you live it day in and day out. The burnout in our profession is real; and increasingly, excellent clinicians are leaving the field for good. Often I hear school psychologists cite the following top 3 reasons for burnout:

  1. Unrealistic case loads

  2. Having to sacrifice your own physical or emotional health for the job.

  3. Administrative oversight/Lack of autonomy in the profession.

What would you add?

It is clear that school districts, on the whole, are not in the business of implementing realistic caseloads, providing adequate resources to clinicians, streamlining administrative tasks, prioritizing professional development, or promoting work-life balance.

What if I told you that finding balance, autonomy, and satisfaction within the profession is not only possible, but absolutely attainable?

I know its attainable because I’ve done it. After years of being overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated, I have found creative work solutions that, I believe, more school psychologists can and should utilize.

Finding flexible job options, working for yourself as a contract employee, and engaging in financial negotiations with districts can seem like a daunting process. But it doesn’t have to be.

Years ago, I wish I had someone to walk with me through the process of stepping in to my own worth as a school psychologist and practice owner. So that you don’t have to do it alone, I offer consultation services that offer valuable insights into the process of working for yourself. Through these consultation services, school psychologists can receive guidance on starting contract work, navigating the business side of independent work, becoming a Licensed Psychological Associate (Texas) and enjoying the benefits of greater autonomy and freedom to create the schedule you want for your life.

Again, excellent clinicians are leaving the profession. But we don’t have to. You can find joy in the job again.
