Tic Treatment in Abilene, TX: CBIT Therapy for Tourette Syndrome

If your child is struggling with motor or vocal tics, you may feel overwhelmed, unsure where to turn, or concerned about medication side effects. The good news: there is an evidence-based, non-medication treatment that works.

Hailey Frazier, LPA, LSSP, founder and owner of Grounded Roots Family Development Center, is currently the only provider certified in Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) in Abilene and the Big Country region.

What Is CBIT?

Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is a structured, research-supported therapy designed to help children and adolescents manage and reduce tics. It is considered a first-line treatment for tic disorders by the Tourette Association of America.

CBIT includes:

  • Psychoeducation about tic disorders

  • Awareness training (recognizing pre-tic sensations)

  • Habit reversal and competing response training

  • Functional interventions to reduce environmental triggers

Research shows that approximately 60% of children experience significant tic reduction, and many continue to benefit long-term. CBIT has been shown to be as effective as medication treatment — without adverse side effects.

Who Can Benefit From CBIT?

CBIT is appropriate for:

  • Children with Tourette Syndrome

  • Children with chronic motor or vocal tic disorders

  • Children whose tics interfere with school, social functioning, or emotional well-being

  • Families who prefer behavioral treatment before medication

You do not need a formal medical diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome to begin CBIT.

Why This Matters for Families in Abilene & Surrounding Areas

Access to specialty care for tic disorders is limited in West Texas. Certified CBIT providers are sparse across rural regions. At this time, Hailey Frazier is the only certified CBIT provider serving Abilene and the Big Country.

This creates what insurance companies often refer to as a network adequacy gap — meaning there may not be an in-network provider within a reasonable distance who offers this specialty service.

In these cases, families may be able to request:

  • Single Case Agreements

  • Gap Exceptions

  • Out-of-Network Authorizations based on Network Adequacy

While approval is never guaranteed, insurance companies sometimes authorize out-of-network coverage when no comparable provider exists within a defined geographic radius.
