Autism Support for Children & Families

Nurturing the growth and well-being of families impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders is part science, part art, and part trial and error.

That’s the beautiful part. Every family and child are different. There is no “one size fits all” approach. While this sentiment can be freeing, it can also be confusing; as parents try to navigate uncharted waters.

While there is no manual, the following are some tips— based on more than 15 years experience in the field of autism, and from raising my own neurodivergent kids.

First, educate yourself: Begin by learning about autism spectrum disorders. Understanding the characteristics, strengths, and challenges associated with autism will empower you to make informed decisions and create a supportive environment tailored to your child's needs.

Next, if you haven’t already, establish routines within your home that are clear and predictable. Autistic children often thrive in structured environments. Establishing a consistent routine can provide a sense of security and predictability. Clearly communicate any changes in advance, allowing your child time to adjust.

Finally, collaboration is key. Work closely with your child’s educators, therapists, and healthcare professionals who specialize in autism. Collaborative efforts between home and school can provide a holistic support system for your child's academic and social development. In the midst of that don’t forget to seek your own support, as you navigate this parenting gig.

At Grounded Roots Family Development Center, we embrace growth, not perfection. If that sounds like the support you need, contact us today.
